Ten People You will Experience at the Thanksgiving Dinner Table

thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Thursday and what would it be without taking time to think about what we are thankful for.  I could write a never-ending list of all the wonderful things God has blessed me with, but instead…

I decided to write a list of people who will be sitting at the table…

which one are you?

dinner table

  1. The host:  Are you the one who hosts dinner?  Does all the planning, preparation, cooking, decorating, table setting, and often times, the one who cleans up as well.
  2. The cleaner: This one is not found at all tables, but when they are the host is much appreciative!  They insist on helping to clear, rinse, pack up leftovers, and even wash and/or load the dish washer!  They also usually offer to help set the table and lend a hand with anything else needed.
  3. The eater: This one does not just eat, but they are the first to mound the plate of food, and begin seconds before grace is even said.  They are often the first one to pass out on the couch after too!
  4. The photographer:  This one needs photos of everything…selfies with the food, the table setting, group shots, desserts…oh…just one more!
  5. The story teller:  There is always one person who has a story ready to share with everyone…sometimes its of a memory of a past family gathering, embarrassing moment, or just some off topic tale of their adventure hiking over the summer.
  6. The gossiper:  This one has the latest news about everyone in the family and is eager to share it with everyone.  Usually this person is the social media junkie who repeats everything…”Did you see what Bob posted yesterday about Veronica?”
  7. The one with the wild child:  There is always one person with the small child who is in that stage where they are just plain irritating…we’ve all been there, so which one of you have the honor this year?
  8. The eat and runner:  This isn’t one who exercises after eating, but one who will eat dinner and then leave because they are avoiding any clean-up or interaction with others…I mean…leave because they have to stop at another family member’s home.
  9. The aspiring politician:  The one who is ready to stir up conversation on a controversial topic just to hear everyone debate.  They are ready with several hooks to throw out for anyone willing to take the bait.
  10. The sulky teen:  We have all been that teenager at the Thanksgiving Day table at some point in our life…who is it this year?

With all the personality types Thanksgiving dinner usually comes together without any major issues, love is felt, laughter is heard, and memories are made ❤

How far along: 26 Weeks

Baby is size of a: according to my Ovia App he is the size of a butternut squash or a bowling pin…he feels more like he’s the size of a bowling ball though!

Total weight gain: I don’t want to talk about this, but doctor is happy (and baby is healthy)!

Maternity clothes:  Of course I’m still wearing them—not the most stylish clothes to wear, but they aren’t what they used to be.  I bought another dress to wear that I do love…I might wear it for the baby shower, but I haven’t decided yet.  Some clothes I feel fabulous in and others just make me feel not so great (like the oversize shorts and shirts I wear to bed)—superficial I know!me
Sleep:  I have quite a bit of difficulty sleeping…after laying on the right for so long I’m sore, so flip to the left, then after so long I’m sore again and flip…then I have to flop out of bed to use the bathroom…then he thinks its time to play and is kicking…then the alarm to wake up sounds.

Best moment this week:  Hmmm…Craig’s surprise date night to see School of Rock…the baby was rockin out to all the music!

resized_20171006_200726.jpg

Symptoms:  Well no more heartburn now that doc prescribed me something.  Shortness of breath, back pain, and of course feeling baby kicking quite a bit—we can even see him moving!

Food cravings: I wanted a Thanksgiving meal, so that is what we had…soooooo good!!!  Apple Cider, Belgium waffles, and apple pie or apple crisp too!

Food aversions:  None

Gender: Boy

Name: Still no name…nothing we are both totally in love with yet, but we will agree on one eventually.

Labor signs: Too early for that, but I swear I felt a couple contractions while walking around the public market yesterday.

What I miss:  Laying on my stomach in bed or being comfortable just laying on the couch.  Bending over with ease is another thing I miss—if you come to my classroom and see highlighters on the floor it’s because I have stopped bending over to pick them up!

What I look forward to:  I was not a fan of the idea of having a baby shower at all, but I am looking forward to seeing people I haven’t seen in a while, celebrating our little MVP, and having a good time.

Milestones: Does the Bills leading the division count?  Maybe baby is good luck for them? (although as I’m typing this they are not doing so well…come on Bills…Super Bowl this year!)

Bump: It’s more like a hump now…

My Top 10 Unexciting Moments of Pregnancy

After writing the Top 10 Best Parts About Being Pregnant I thought it might be fun to think about the struggles.  I am beyond thankful to be pregnant, but there are some moments that can cause some frustration.  This is what I came up with…

10. Doctor Appointments:  I feel like I’ve been to the doctor’s more than Wegmans lately.  I was going more than usual so he could monitor me a little closer, but it is worth it to make sure everything is in order and baby is healthy.

9.  Zika Virus:  We wanted to do some traveling over the summer, but Doc said no due to the risk of the Zika Virus.  I’ll usually go against doctor orders without batting an eyelash, but I’m not going to put my child at risk—maybe we will plan a weekend babymoon close to home instead.

8.  Maternity Clothes:  Ok, it has been years since my previous pregnancies and maternity clothes have improved quite a bit, but they still have a long way to go!  What woman wants to look like they are wearing a tablecloth?  Enough with the stripes! And what is with all the bows and ties—just because I have a child growing inside of me does not mean I want to look like one!

7.  Weight Comments:  I have never had so many people feel like its appropriate to comment about my weight!  A “family member” recently felt it was appropriate to address me by saying, “what’s up fatty” (just one of the flavorful comments she made).  For one I’m not fat, way thinner than her (not to mention I have a full mouth of my own teeth), and I’ve only gained nine pounds according to my last doc appointment.

6. People asking when the wedding is:  If we had a dollar for every time we have been asked this we could have a destination wedding and pay for our entire family to come!  Just because we are expecting does not mean I’ll be waddling down the isle!

5. Shaving, clipping toe nails…anything involving bending over:  Things are difficult to reach, see, and it can be incredibly frustrating.

4. Sleep: I toss and turn quite a bit!  When a comfortable position is finally found it only lasts just a short time.  I’m too hot!  No, too cold…where did I kick that blanket?  Where is the Pepcid?  Ohhhh…not a leg cramp….not now!  That can’t be my alarm—I just fell asleep!

3. Hearing “you’re crazy” or “are you sure you want another?”:  I’ve never been one to walk to the beat of the drum society is playing…and I don’t intend to now.  I’m fully aware that I am in a sense “starting over” as some say, but just because you are afraid to live your life, doesn’t mean I am.  People have called me crazy for all kinds of decisions—being a teen mom, going back to college, wanting to teach students with disabilities, wanting to teach in the school I’m in…all of which make me incredibly happy and proud, so how is that crazy?

2. FatigueAt the end of the work day I am spent!  I’m on my feet the majority of the day, then it’s picking up from practices, cooking dinner, cleaning up the house, and I do try and make time in there for a nap or at least some couch time with my favorite blanket!

1. Mood swings:  These hit me off guard (pun intended)!  They have finally seemed to level out, but they were quite intense earlier in my pregnancy.  One second I was fine, next crying over a nothing, and then the temper would come out of nowhere!  I’ve never experienced such a range all at once—my family deserves an award for putting up with me through them!

Three Months & Two Days

I wanted to provide an update for people because I’m incredibly excited that I have made it to three months and two days as a non-smoker!  I joined the non-smoking club November 13th, 2016 after listening to a self-hypnosis video!

I’m not crazy…it really worked!!  I wasn’t intentionally searching for a quit smoking video…I happened to stumble upon it and after reading the many comments from others stating how it worked for them, I thought why not give it a try.  I listened to it before bed for a couple nights and have not smoked a cigarette since!  The sound of Michael Sealey’s voice is calming which made me fall asleep rather quickly, so I didn’t even put much effort into listening.  I was moody an evil demon for a couple weeks, but other than that I didn’t have any other side effects.

My past attempts were always a battle, but this time was different…much different.  I’m still floored at how easy it was and wanted to share it with other people who may be struggling with this addiction.

Since I’ve quit I’ve noticed:

  • my skin is clearer and smoother
  • I feel healthier
  • I sleep better
  • my hair, skin, and clothes smell amazing
  • I quickly realized I smoked when I was bored…I now use that time to be productive
  • I save a ton of money!

Are you or do you know someone who is struggling with a smoking addiction?  Share this post with them and give the video a try!

PMS: The Struggle is Real!

I was reminded this weekend how it is impossible to be positive all of the time…how there are days that hormones just take over and cause total destruction.  I tried, tried pretty darn hard I’d say to keep positive, but I finally surrendered when I just couldn’t take it anymore.

pms2

Friday night wasn’t so bad…I watched some football movie on Netflix…Mark Wahlburg was in it and played some Eagles player…Invincible was the name of it.  I was balling my eyes out…I immediately knew hormones were playing a factor because I don’t cry easily…well, except when you catch me this time of the month!  I told myself ok, now the next couple of days are going to be great!  This will be the month the moodiness will not visit!  I feel fabulous, eating healthy, gym action going on…all will be good!

pms1

Then Bam…the switch was flipped!  Dear boyfriend just doesn’t understand.  My due date is even programed in his phone to make him aware of the days to leave me be, but for some strange reason he just doesn’t believe that it’s a real thing…the struggle is real!

pms-copy

What escalated the situation is my trip to McDonalds.  I very rarely eat fast food, but I was feeling disgusting, skipped the gym, and decided I wanted hotcakes!  Why do they call them that—they are pancakes!  I can’t even tell you the last time I ate McDonalds, but all I know is I wanted pancakes with hash browns….ohhh and I tossed on an order of nuggets too to add to the misery!  I asked for syrup to dip the nuggets in, but she told me I couldn’t substitute that, so I ordered an extra–no big deal–I wanted an extra syrup…period!  haha..pun not intended!  Well, of course I get home, set everything up to chow down and find out there is no extra syrup!  Holy flames and f-bombs Batman!  Out of all the days to screw up my order this was the worst!

pms3

The remainder of my night was spent doing my laundry (folding laundry is quite calming), watching Netflix, eating a Skor candy bar, uploading pictures to Facebook, and slowly coming down off that evil estrogen spike as I write this blog post…see, writing can be therapeutic!

Pray for my students tomorrow…better yet, pray for a snow day!

The Power of Music: Positive Vibes Soundtrack

music

A fun project my students and I worked on was to create a soundtrack of songs that immediately put you in a positive mood.  Students have a host of struggles which spill over in their academics, and since they enjoy listening to music I challenged them to create a list they can turn to or should I say, turn up (ha…see the puns there) if they feel a bad mood creeping in.

Ohhh…one more rule was that the artist had to be African American (or write lyrics touching on African American issues) because I currently teach African American Literature and this was a way I could incorporate additional learning.

I have found starting class off with a positive song improves the environment of the classroom…this is not always an easy task as I teach in an inner city school. (Students are ages 16-21).

Have you heard?  What we put in our bodies affects us—we have the power to decide if that is for the positive or the negative.  We discussed that when we are in a bad mood we tend to gravitate to and listen to music that makes us even more angry and upset.  Being mindful about what you are listening to can change that.

Our Positive Vibes Soundtrack

Pharrell Williams “Happy”

Pharrell Williams “Freedom”

Kirk Franklin “Smile”

Tupac “Dear Mama”

Tupac “Keep Ya Head Up”

Tupac “Changes”

Alicia Keys “Superwoman”

Alicia Keys “Girl on Fire”

Tasha Page-Lockhart “Fragile”

Bob Marley “Buffalo Soldier”

The Temptations “I got Sunshine”

Otis Redding “Dock of the Bay”

Meek Mill “Traumatized”

Jussie Smollett Conqueror

Monica “Angel of Mine”

Comment:  What song immediately puts you in a good mood?  What song would you add to our list?

What if you fly?

We all tremble inside at the thought of something…what is it that you fear?  Is it beginning something new?  Starting over?  A career choice?  Going back to school?  Traveling?  Trying a new workout at the gym (who is possibly afraid of this right…yup…yours truly)?  Public speaking?  Initiating a conversation? Starting a blog? Change?

Whatever it is…step outside of your comfort zone and fly!  It will build a stronger you, a sharper you, and a more confident you!  You will grow in more ways than you can imagine.  Picture your life after overcoming the fear?  What will your life look like then?

What is it that makes you tremble?
