Ten People You will Experience at the Thanksgiving Dinner Table

thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Thursday and what would it be without taking time to think about what we are thankful for.  I could write a never-ending list of all the wonderful things God has blessed me with, but instead…

I decided to write a list of people who will be sitting at the table…

which one are you?

dinner table

  1. The host:  Are you the one who hosts dinner?  Does all the planning, preparation, cooking, decorating, table setting, and often times, the one who cleans up as well.
  2. The cleaner: This one is not found at all tables, but when they are the host is much appreciative!  They insist on helping to clear, rinse, pack up leftovers, and even wash and/or load the dish washer!  They also usually offer to help set the table and lend a hand with anything else needed.
  3. The eater: This one does not just eat, but they are the first to mound the plate of food, and begin seconds before grace is even said.  They are often the first one to pass out on the couch after too!
  4. The photographer:  This one needs photos of everything…selfies with the food, the table setting, group shots, desserts…oh…just one more!
  5. The story teller:  There is always one person who has a story ready to share with everyone…sometimes its of a memory of a past family gathering, embarrassing moment, or just some off topic tale of their adventure hiking over the summer.
  6. The gossiper:  This one has the latest news about everyone in the family and is eager to share it with everyone.  Usually this person is the social media junkie who repeats everything…”Did you see what Bob posted yesterday about Veronica?”
  7. The one with the wild child:  There is always one person with the small child who is in that stage where they are just plain irritating…we’ve all been there, so which one of you have the honor this year?
  8. The eat and runner:  This isn’t one who exercises after eating, but one who will eat dinner and then leave because they are avoiding any clean-up or interaction with others…I mean…leave because they have to stop at another family member’s home.
  9. The aspiring politician:  The one who is ready to stir up conversation on a controversial topic just to hear everyone debate.  They are ready with several hooks to throw out for anyone willing to take the bait.
  10. The sulky teen:  We have all been that teenager at the Thanksgiving Day table at some point in our life…who is it this year?

With all the personality types Thanksgiving dinner usually comes together without any major issues, love is felt, laughter is heard, and memories are made ❤

A Peek into Our Family Fall Pictures

Sneak Peek Family Pics Blog

The one must every year for me is to take fall family pictures! The fall is my favorite season.  I started years ago with just taking a few photos of the kids raking leaves, jumping in the pile we created, and going pumpkin picking.

It evolved into an event where more family members came and we took pictures of everyone.  Due to schedule constraints the past few years we have decided to just keep it small with just us–it’s difficult as it is to plan to take them with keeping in mind the peak foliage time, work schedules, and the unpredictable Rochester weather.

We had to do them at 8:30am this year (I was worried we wouldn’t have enough sunlight), and the temperature was about 35°-40°, so we were all freeeeezing!  There were even times where you could see our breath from talking and laughing that I thought it might ruin the shots.  Even though we didn’t take as many as we usually do I’m thankful we were able to take the ones we did ❤

We ended our hour session with McKinley in a tree as usual…

Last year & this year (2016 & 2017)

Random Facts About Fall Family Picture Day

  1. There is much arguing and bickering prior to many of the shots
  2. Cole must flip and fluff his hair for every photo
  3. McKinley wore a pair of my shoes, and was not happy about it (she wanted to wear her Nike sneakers)
  4. A spare, handy towel was used for Craig’s runny nose
  5. This was the first year EVERYONE wore the same color (gray)…with the planned exception of me which we decided on purpose
  6. Autumn arrived on time which just doesn’t usually happen
  7. It was so cold that I didn’t switch my lens or settings like I should have
  8. We were unsure if we would have enough sunlight because Autumn had to be at work, so we had to work around her schedule
  9. It was about 35° out…burrrrrrrr
  10. Autumn and I wore the exact same nail polish (unintentional)
  11. Cole’s famous line, “I’m so cold my nipples are as hard as rocks” made us laugh so hard I thought our breath was going to ruin the pics (from the cold)

24 Weeks Pregnancy Update

24 weeks pregnant collage.jpg

How far along: 24 Weeks
Baby is size of a: according to my Ovia App he is the size of an eggplant
Total weight gain: I don’t weigh myself at home, but I will find out Friday at my next appointment
Maternity clothes:  Wearing them every day!  Just bought a new dress on amazon and was a little worried because it isn’t technically a maternity dress, but it was just delivered yesterday and I love it!
Sleep:  Sleeping better, but he wakes me up with all the movement sometimes.
Best moment this week:

1.  Craig surprising me with a “in between seasons” Fabfitfun box with some new maternity shirts for the upcoming cooler weather.  He really goes above and beyond to make sure I’m comfortable and taken care of.  He has to be the most creative and thoughtful man on the planet!

2. Our sunset date with McKinely…we took some great silhouette pictures.  We were even able to take one of McKinley giving the peace sign which she loved—she does not like photos taken of herself, so this was a huge surprise!
Symptoms:  Heartburn is still in full force…call me the Pepcid popper!  Since I really do not enjoy taking medication every day I drank apple cider vinegar mixed with water before bed last night and no heartburn. I’ll be trying this again to avoid taking meds!

Food cravings: Goulash…yummm!
Food aversions:  None
Gender: Boy
Name: No name yet…I’m in love with the name Curtis, but Craig has an uncle with the same name which would be a little awkward.  We are still searching for a name for him.
Labor signs: Too early for that
What I miss:  My non-maternity clothes…I miss having more options to pick from.
What I look forward to:  Now that the nursery is painted I’m looking forward to beginning to design it
Milestones: You can SEE my stomach move when he is moving around in there
Bump: For 24 weeks I feel larger than my previous pregnancies…a little scary considering they were large babies.

What will we name him?

One of the most frequent questions we are asked after people know we are having a boy is…

What are you naming him?

It feels like we have discussed several thousand names.  Being a teacher makes selecting a name a little more challenging.  Another layer to that is one of the schools we both worked at we referred to students by their initials, so we have thought about what his initials will be as well.

 teacher

Our name we picked out for a girl is Lyndon and I’m still absolutely in love with it, but we are having a boy.

Some of the names for our little boy we have discussed are…

Joseph:  Craig’s father’s first name.  Since Craig’s father has passed away we thought about using part of his name for the baby, but we aren’t too fond of other people we know with that name.  Even more so, we don’t like the idea of him being called “Joe” or “Joey”.

Lawrence:  Craig’s father’s middle name.  We liked it for a little while, but again, we aren’t thrilled with the thought of him being called “Larry”.

Cayden:  Craig keeps circling around back to this name, but I’m not sold on it at all.

Laxton: I like this one…Craig does not.  He prefers Paxton, but Cole had a friend with that name and I just can’t.

Jaxson or Jackson:  Craig likes this one, but it’s way too popular.

Max/Maxwell:  Craig is into this one too—as I write this I realize how open he is and how resistant I am.  Maxwell reminds me of coffee and Max sort of sounds like a dog…I’m just not so sure about it.

Maddox:  In case you haven’t noticed, Craig likes names with an “x” in them.  I’m not a fan of this one…uggg will I ever like a name?

Lennox:  Family name which would have a lot of meaning, but not sold on him being called “Len” or “Lenny”…as an English Teacher all I can think of is Lenny in Of Mice and Men.

Isaiah:  I like this one, but Craig accuses me of being a closet Celtics fan and thinks that’s why I like the name.  I do like the player Isaiah Thomas a lot, but since he is now on the Cavs this name is off my list (I’m not a Cavs fan).

Josiah:  This name we both like, but are not in love with it.  Since Craig’s father’s name is Joseph is has that connection, but again we don’t like the idea of him being called “Joe” or “Joey”.

Pierce:  I like this one, but Craig does not—since it is a former Celtic player (I swear I’m not a Celtic fan).

Craig Jr.:  Craig doesn’t like the idea because he feels a lot of men who name their son after them are controlling and he doesn’t want to be that dad.  He wants him to have his own identity.

Do we select a name that is popular?  Unique, but not too unique?  Family name?  A Jr?  So much to think about, but I know when the time comes we will have the perfect name for our little one.

When we have decided on a name we have agreed not to share it with anyone until he is born…now if we can just agree on a name for the lil guy!

Top 10 Best Parts About Being Pregnant

top ten best parts about being pregnant

Pregnancy isn’t always full of positive experiences, but I took a moment to reflect on what my top 10 best parts.  This is what I came up with…

10.  More to blog about:  With all the excitement I have more to write about…I just have to commit to taking a specific amount of time to write per day/week.

9.  Organization: I’m a pretty organized person, but now I have stepped it up a notch and started to update my lists of birthdays of family and friends–I used to be a lot more thoughtful and send cards for special occasions and now I want to make it a goal to do that again!

8.   No period:  Does this one need much explaining?

7.  Another excuse to take pictures:  I enjoy taking photos, and another reason just makes it even better!  I have very few photos of my previous pregnancies, and this one being my last means I will take tons!  I’m sure I will drive some nuts with them all, but I’m excited and proud of my growing, healthy baby…and body.

6.  A reason to buy new clothes…and shoes….and bras:  Even if I’m not a huge fan of maternity clothes I do like buying new clothes…I have been able to find quite a few items that I like to wear, and I will be needing to stock up on some winter items too!  Since I’m on my feet all day teaching I *had* to go shoe shopping too.  I’ve found that sketchers have some really comfortable shoes and some of them are cute!  I did have to break down and buy new bras which I didn’t want to do at first, but I’m much more comfortable now—that could explain why my moods have leveled off lately?!?!

5.  Learning more about my body:  I have learned more about my body by being pregnant this time around than I have ever.  I have more of an interest in learning about what is going on, so I research everything.  I now realize that the cramping I  usually feel mid-cycle is actually ovulation, I know the difference between an ovary and follicle,  what the placenta vs. uterus is, and even the various theories of gender swaying and prediction—I became a bit obsessed with reading all about those!

4.  Presents:  Who doesn’t love presents?  I have received maternity clothes, a mani-pedi gift certificate, a homemade blanket, packages in the mail of goodies for our little one, and bags of baby clothes that will be a huge help!  I’m a lover of those fun types of surprises, so they are definitely one of the best parts of being pregnant!

3.  People (including students) are generally nicer:  Maybe I’m imagining it, but students and co-workers seem a lot more friendly.  Even strangers spark up conversations and smile more than usual.  Who can be mean to a pregnant woman I guess?  Friendly people means one happy pregnant momma!

2.  People are more likely to go out of their way to give you what you want…cravings:  Not that I abuse the perk, but I do enjoy being given what I want, when I want it…man I have a penchant for those Tim Horton’s blueberry muffins!  Craig is picking one up on his way home from work as I type this.  Now if I can convince my mom to make her lemon poppy seed bread…hmmm…is she reading?

1. Realizing there is a little life growing inside…beyond amazing:  Taking a moment to really think about the life growing inside, the miracle of it all, how I’m chosen to carry this tiny life, wow…God is great!  Feeling his movements is precious, but most moms know there is that uncomfortable feeling my cousin Brittany describes perfectly when she said, “the worst is when he will literally feel like his foot is coming out of your va-j!”

On that note…my next post just might be about the struggles of being pregnant.

What Makes YOU Shine?

What Makes YOU Shine?  What do you do to make life more enjoyable for others?

If you can’t think of what you do to uplift people then here are five simple suggestions.

  1. Greet People:  Throughout the day make it a point to greet people…not only the people you perceive as important, but the people who may be unnoticed as well…even if they do not greet you back!  A smile along with a “good morning” is simple enough.  If you’re walking in the store hold the door for the next person—whoever they happen to be.
  2. Listen:  Many people want to be heard, but it is also important to stop and listen (really listen) to others.  I don’t mean listen to people ramble on and on, but to remember what they say. For example, remember what they will be doing over the weekend and ask them on Monday how their activity/plans went.  As a teacher I also make it a point to do this with my students.  As a parent, with my children.  I even practice this when I’m interacting with cashiers at the store.
  3. Notice and Acknowledgement:  When someone is doing something positive notice it and offer acknowledgement.  This can mean noticing that your child completed a chore without needing to be asked and complimenting them, writing a note to a co-worker to say what a great job they are doing, or even sending an email to let a person know that you appreciate the extra effort they have been investing in a certain task.
  4. Share:  Whatever your talent is or something you are good at…share it with others.  This can be as simple as you make the best banana bread ever…then bring some to work to share or pass a loaf on to a neighbor.  Do you have the skill to knit?  Make a blanket and pass it on to someone…just start knitting and in the process you will realize who it is meant for.
  5. Thank: When is the last time you wrote a thank you note/card?  Show appreciation even in the small things and make it a part of your routine to spend time writing a note to someone to thank them.  It could be for something in the past that they did for you, a mentor, friend, relative, child, or even to a store to thank them for the great customer service!11Comment:  What makes YOU shine?  Share with us something you do to make life more enjoyable for others.

*hugs*

Struggling to Select a Specific Blog Name

I’m still a newbie when it comes to blogging, but learning quite a bit each day.  One area I’m struggling with is deciding on a specific blog name.

Some of my random thoughts while trying to come up with one…

  • Journal Blog is an oxymoron…right?!?!  I need to change this sooon!
  • Ok, Let’s see what the thesaurus comes up with for “journal”…no help there
  • Hmm…how about thinking about some of my favorite poems…Crystaleyes Rises…nah!  Phenomenal Crystaleyes…umm…no!  Road Wandered by Crystaleyes…not liking the “by” part, but “road wandered” doesn’t sound so bad
  • How about playing with book titles…Voyage with Crystaleyes, Lord of the Crystaleyes, Heart of Crystaleyes…hmmm…now that is more like it. Their Eyes Were Watching Crystaleyes…hmmm…a lot of eyes going on there…ehhh…not for me
  • How about scrapping Crystaleyes…ok, now I need a fresh, new name…
  • How about using a phoenix which represents my life…quick Google search and looks like I’m not the first one with that bright idea…I do like Phoenix Rises though…I bet it’s taken already…whooohooo, nope it’s not taken…I’m not sure though…I want something I love, something I don’t want to change
  • wait…can I change my blog name, but keep all my posts?  I better check on that!
  • Forget the healthy eating I’ll take a Nutter Butter
  • How about A Nutter Blog…or Just a Nutter Blog…hahaha…that’s cute, but still not for me
  • Collecting Beautiful Moments…Crystal’s Beautiful Moments…Collector of Beautiful Moments…

Comment:  How did you decide on your blog name?  Did you change your name at any point?  Any suggestions for me?
