Reaching out, embracing life…

Reaching out, embracing life…

Through my years as a teacher I have experienced principals with different leadership styles, and through each I learn more about myself and the qualities that are important for me to have as a leader. Today I received an offer to be an Administrative Intern for summer school. This is the next step in my journey, and I’m beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity. It will be in an elementary school, and if you know me you are probably snickering at the thought. I’ve always been drawn to high-school age students, but I enjoy new adventures and am ready to be a part of a team in an elementary school.

Tips for anyone looking for or trying to secure a position:

Someone once told me if you want the job you need to stand out and go above and beyond. Most people would think they don’t need to go above and beyond (well if you want it bad enough you do). I always bring a packet of materials that I leave with the individual I’m interviewing with that clearly display my skills and projects I’ve completed (newsletters, assignments I created, lesson plans, pictures, copies of student work…basically, a mini-portfolio). This allows her/him/them to be reminded of who I am after everyone has been interviewed.

Another tip is to send a thank you card. Yes…a thank you card! After the interview if I have a good vibe and know I have a high interest I will send a thank you note to the person conducting the interview. Every time I’ve done this I have been offered the position (ok…maybe once I wasn’t, but it works!) My principal who hired me has the one I sent him hanging up in his office.

Time to get my dream on…

I’m a mother of three beautiful children who have given me the strength in life to be determined in reaching my goals. I am a teacher certified in English and Special Education and truly enjoy going to work every day. I recently completed my requirements to become certified in school district leadership to make an impact on a much larger scale. I have had my fair share of blood, sweat, and tears, but the entire journey has made me grateful and appreciative of all that I have. One strategy I found helpful was to find something every day to be thankful for---focus on the positives in life! My goal with this blog is to do just that---focus on those “little” moments with the hope to inspire others.

  1. Great tips and I agree! I always think we should give everything that we do our 100%. If it’s something you truly love, anything less than above and beyond should feel sour.

Thank you cards is such an old school but tried and true tip as well. I usually send emails, but if it’s for someone of high authority or if I sincerely am grateful for them, I usually send a handwritten card.

Good job and keep up the positive mindset!
